MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels have acquired $ 1 million in international bonus funds from the Minnesota Twins, helping their pursuit of outfielder and Japanese shooter Shohei Ohtani.
The teams announced the agreements on Wednesday night. Seattle sent minor league receiver David Bañuelos to Minnesota, while the Angels traded minor outfielder Jacob Pearson for the Twins.
Seattle can now offer Ohtani $ 2,557,500 and Los Angeles can spend $ 2,315,000. The Texas Rangers have the most money available with $ 3,535,000. Seattle, Los Angeles and Texas are among the seven teams that are believed to be competing for Ohtani.
Minnesota had $ 3.07 million in bonus money before the negotiations, but is not among the finalists in the Ohtani tender.
Bañuelos was a fifth-round pick in this year's Long Beach State draft. He is considered a faithful fielder and was a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award as one of the best amateur receivers in the country.
Pearson was selected in the third round of Los Angeles this year.
