A man accused of killing his girlfriend's daughter had sexually abused the 3-year-old North Carolina girl before his death, court documents provided by the family program.
The Onslow County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday that the remains found in a stream last week belonged to Mariah Woods, who was reported missing by her mother five days before the horrific discovery, FOX8 reported. Earl Kimrey, the boyfriend of Woods's mother, was arrested and charged with hiding the death the day before the body was found.
Kimrey allegedly sexually abused Woods and his two younger brothers, police said. He also hit "both [boys] with a belt" that caused a bloody nose to one of them, according to court documents provided to the Jacksonville Daily News by Mariah's biological father, Alex Woods.
One of the boys told investigators that he saw Kimrey allegedly sexually abusing Woods. Mariah's mother knew about Kimrey's alleged abuse and drug use, according to court documents.
"The defendant mother [Kristy Woods] did not protect the minors from discipline on the part of Mr. Kimrey," the court documents said. "The parents surveyed have a history of exposing children to situations and conversations of adults during their battle for custody."
It is not yet clear what caused the death of the 3-year-old boy, but an arrest warrant for Kimrey's boyfriend "hid the death and body of Mariah Woods, knowing that Mariah Woods died of unnatural causes," according to FOX8. Then he "secretly got rid of the body of the dead child."
Additional charges may be filed against Kimrey after the autopsy results are made public.
