Manchester City wins the Premier League title while West Brom beats United

When Manchester City collapsed in the second half of the Manchester Derby last weekend, their Premier League title game was apparently postponed for at least two weeks. In the end, the game only had to wait eight days.

Manchester United followed the city's 3-1 triumph over Tottenham on Saturday with a surprising 1-0 defeat at home to 20th place, West Brom, on Sunday. The two results, together, assured the City its third Premier League title.

There may not even be a full-fledged title party. Pep Guardiola said after Tottenham's victory that he would not even be watching Sunday's game at Old Trafford. He would be playing golf instead. The players said they would be with the family. That, in part, explains how unlikely West Brom's victory was.

But by the end of the season, the title of the City will not be less satisfactory. It will be no less impressive. A decisive one against the climatology will not depress the eventual celebrations.

The Citizens won the crown with five games of advantage, and 16 points between them and United's second place. It is not exactly the record of the oldest award date. That will stay with Manchester United 2000-01 for a day.

But City still has chances to break other Premier League records. He is eight points from 2004-05, Chelsea's best mark at 95. He can score the best marks for most goals (103, Chelsea 2009-10) and most wins (30, Chelsea 2016-17).

Has It's been a brilliant season for City, one that in many ways deserved to end with a title party after a win over United last weekend. It was not so. But City will raise its trophy anyway. West Brom made sure of that on Sunday.
