CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – A man died Saturday night after exchanging gunfire with Clay County officers, authorities said.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said it responded around 10:50 p.m. to an apartment complex on Burwick Avenue, near Blanding Boulevard, after receiving multiple calls about shooting.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived about five minutes later and encountered a gunman who then began shooting at them. Officers shoot and beat the man, the Sheriff’s Office said.
One woman, who did not want to be identified, told News4Jax that she and her boyfriend were watching television when they heard the first shots not far from their unit.
“The shots, I counted as seven,” he said. “I was like, ‘Wait a second?’ I was realizing what it was. “
Moments later, the woman said, they heard more.
“They stopped a bit,” he recalled. “I went to the bathroom and then I heard the vibration and yelled, ‘Did they start shooting again?’ And then he said, ‘Yes, they started shooting from one side to the other, from one side to the other.’
The man was taken to Orange Park Medical Center, where he died around 11:30 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said. Investigators said his identity will not be revealed until his family has been contacted.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, this was the first shooting involved by a deputy for each of the three deputies involved. The deputies, who have law enforcement experience ranging from three to six years, were not injured.
“We appreciate the continued support of our community and ask that we keep in your thoughts and prayers all those involved in the incident tonight,” said Sheriff Michelle Cook.
The woman News4Jax spoke to said she is grateful that she and her boyfriend are safe.
“I moved to Clay because I feel safer in Clay County for some reason. I don’t know if that’s just a mentality that I have, ”he said. “So seeing things like this so close to home, it’s sad you know?”
At the request of the Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded to investigate.
