In 1994, Edwyn Collins, the Scottish post-punker and former Orange Juice frontman, achieved unexpected worldwide success with his crafty David Bowie-style song “A Girl Like You.” It was great! But in its original form, “A Girl Like You” didn’t have any portentous, fake-dramatic digital hits, and it didn’t have an ex-rapper growling through Auto-Tune. (The recent version of the Tame Impala song didn’t have any of those things either.) They were serious oversights, and now Machine Gun Kelly is here to fix them.
Last year, Ohio rap star MGK achieved a truly amazing career turnaround. He teamed up with Travis Barker from Blink-182, and remade himself as a punk star from the Warped Tour of the mid-2000s. Somehow this worked. Machine Gun Kelly’s punk album Tickets to my fall debuted at # 1, and now other rappers like Trippie Redd are employing Travis Barker and trying to make the same transition. MGK continues down this digital rock-type path – witness “Daywalker,” the squeaky new song he recorded with YouTube star Corpse, and now he’s back with Barker to record an extremely unnecessary version of “A Girl Like You.” . for a new Amazon series.
Amazon’s new program is called Paradise City, and is apparently a spinoff of a 2017 supernatural horror musical called American Satan. The show, which begins airing tomorrow, has a truly amazing cast including Bella Thorne, Drea De Matteo, Mark Boone Junior, Fairuza Balk, Hopsin, and Lamb Of God Randy Blythe. (In a way, Machine Gun Kelly is do not in the cast, despite their proven affinity for this sort of thing). The trailer would be absurd even without that version of “A Girl Like You.” Check out the trailer below and then get cleaned up with the Edwyn Collins original video.
I hope to god I’m speaking metaphorically but Paradise City premieres tomorrow on Amazon Prime. However, Fairuza Balk.
