Health officials said that some people in Los Angeles should wear masks inside their homes as COVID-19 cases climb at an alarming rate.
The news agency KABC reported that Los Angeles County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer on Monday urged anyone living with someone else to apply the mask at home.
“Right now, because there is so much spread out there, we are recommending that people cover their faces while they are indoors. When we go through this boom it will add a layer of protection,” Ferrer said at a press conference .
Ferrer said that the precaution is particularly recommended for essential workers or anyone leaving their homes to carry out essential tasks.
“We strongly recommend that you keep your face covered if you are a worker who is quitting every day or in fact you are someone who needs to carry out the necessary tasks in your family,” Ferrer said.
The latest guidance comes as the county has become one of the hardest hit areas.
In Los Angeles, about 10 people test the virus every minute on average, the KABC reported.
Ferrer said the county is “speeding up our pace to reach serious milestones of 1 million cases.”
“The biggest loss our families and local hospitals have suffered from this boom has been experienced by our county for decades,” she said.
