Two Los Angeles police officers are in critical condition after being shot.
Video of the incident shows a figure near the officers’ vehicle before setting it on fire and fleeing.
Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva called the act “cowardice”. The suspect remains at large.
Nearly 40 US police officers were killed while on duty in 2020, with FBI figures showing eight of them victims of an ambush.
The protesters shouted anti-police slogans and blocked the entrance to the emergency room where both officers are being treated, police and witnesses said.
The officers involved have not been named, but have been described as a 31-year-old woman and 24-year-old man.
The LA County Sheriff tweeted, “A male deputy and a female deputy were ambushed while sitting in their patrol vehicle. They both sustained multiple gunshot wounds and are in critical condition. They are both undergoing surgery right now. The suspect is currently Are also on a larger scale. “
Sheriff Villanueva said, “It’s just a reminding job. It’s a dangerous job. Actions, words have consequences and our job is not easy because people don’t like enforcing the law.”
Sharing footage of the incident, US President Donald Trump tweeted: “Animals that must be hit hard.”
He has made law and order a central part of his bid for re-election.
