Chris Smalling has been talking about the incident during Wednesday's Champions League clash with Barcelona when he surprised Lionel Messi.
The challenge left the Barça captain covered in blood and in need of treatment, but Smalling says he talked to the GOAT after the game and said he knew it was an accidental collision.
"Yes, we'll talk later." At that time I did not realize I had really caught him like that, "he said.
"But after the game we had a brief talk, we shook his hand and he said he knew it was an accident.
"[Luis] Also after Suarez, we had a good fight and he shook my hand and said good luck and we just said good luck.
"So it's good when you can have that battle on the field and, obviously, there's total respect after the game because in the end you're just trying to do your best and enjoy the game."
