Last November, the first million euros worth of trolleybuses were brought to Riga, but until now it has not left the depot yet. The project worth 16 million is stuck. It was promised to finish in the spring, then in the summer, now the trolleybus is only promising to appear in the streets in the autumn. Project delaying technical difficulties. It may turn out that the laws of hydrogen trolleybus will be further blocked by unpardonated laws, outlined by TV.
Public transport is pride of the Riga City Council, led by the party "Harmony". The city administration takes care of transporting the riders with the latest and most modern trams, trolleybuses and buses. Every year, more than a hundred million euros are allocated from the city budget. Now the challenge is to move to environmentally friendly trolleybuses and buses.
More than two years ago, "Rīgas Satiksme" announced its ambitious plans to transport Rigans to hydrogen-powered trolleybuses. Riga first in the world chose to introduce hydrogen powered trolleybuses, it could attract European money for innovations. Nobody else in the world had ever imagined that a trolleybus could be fitted with a hydrogen plant that would generate electricity. Although the idea for European officials seemed to be welcomed, the project's effectiveness was questioned by scientists.
"Trolleybus is a contact network. I do not understand why a hydrogen trolleybus would be needed," says Oskars Krievs, Dean of the RTU Faculty of Power and Electrical Engineering, pointing out that this would be understandable in the case of a bus.
He also points out that he does not see the reason why a hydrogen trolleybus would be needed to scale small pieces without a load, because it would be easier to solve with lithium batteries, which would certainly be cheaper than the introduction of hydrogen technologies.

However, no authority can be sanctioned by the experimenters. The filling stations are the responsibility of the Ministry of Transport, but the rules adopted by the government and hurried at the beginning of this year are chaotic.
All ten hydrogen trolleybuses ordered in Riga have already been produced. Nine are in Poland at the manufacturer, waiting for Riga to be ready to run on the streets.
