Latvia is ready to host eight more teams during the hockey championship The news

Riga, January 21, LETA. Latvia will apply for the right to host eight more teams during the World Hockey Championships, Finance Minister Jānis Reirs (JV) reported at a press conference following the government meeting.

He said the government on Thursday heard information provided by the Latvian Hockey Federation (LHF) and decided that Latvia would apply for the right to host eight more teams during the hockey championship.

The minister declined to comment on the possibility of co-financing the organization of the hockey championship in Riga from the budget. He added that these issues will be decided when the IIHF’s decision on the course of the championship is known.

In his conversation with LETA on Thursday, LHF President and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Aigars Kalvītis, stated that the federation is ready to play all games of the World Hockey Championship in Latvia, adding that the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) has been informed about it. .

On Thursday, at the Latvian government meeting, an informative report “Current information on the organization of the 2021 Men’s Hockey World Championship in Latvia” was included, which was seen behind closed doors. In a conversation with LETA, the president of LHF Kalvītis indicated that the issue was considered in a closed session and that he has no right to reveal what happened at the meeting.

However, commenting on the additional activities of the LHF, he said that “we have submitted our request to organize the entire championship in Latvia to the International Hockey Federation, and now we just have to wait for a response.”

Kalvitis added that it may be clear from tomorrow until the middle of next week.

“It depends on when the IIHF Council meets,” he explained. “If we get the right to host all the world championship games, we will talk about how to ensure competition,” he said.

As reported, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (JV) welcomes the IIHF Council’s decision to deprive Minsk of the rights of the organizers of the 2021 World Cup. At the same time, the Prime Minister stated that it awaits further information from the IIHF on future actions with the organization of the hockey championship.

Kariņš assured reporters on Monday that Latvia is still ready to secure the previously agreed stage of the hockey championship. However, if the IIHF offers Riga to host the championship in its entirety, then the question of additional costs and who will cover them will be important. It will also be an important question whether there are enough places in Latvia where hockey games can take place.

It is not yet known which country will be entrusted with the games previously scheduled for Minsk, but one option is to entrust the entrustment of the entire championship to Latvia. The IIHF Council will continue to consider Latvia’s status as a co-organizer. It was previously reported that the World Cup could be hosted in part or in full by Denmark or the Slovak capital, Bratislava.

The 2021 World Championship is scheduled from May 21 to June 6. The championship was previously scheduled to start on May 7, but was postponed a couple of weeks earlier as the European national championships could be delayed.

Riga has hosted the World Championships for the only time so far in 2006.
