Sleep-deprived children who do not sleep eight hours a day are twice as likely to have metabolic syndrome as children who do not have it, research shows.

Professor Park Kyunghee of the Department of Family Medicine at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital badyzed the causes of the metabolic syndrome by observing pediatric adolescents over a long period of time.
The researchers followed the health and nutritional status of 1309 children aged 6 to 15 years without any metabolic syndrome among the pediatric adolescents in Seoul and Gyeonggi province from 2008 to 2014. As a result, 31.3% (410 children) of the children had metabolic syndrome during the follow-up period.

The research team badyzed the risk factors for the metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents. ▲ When the child is already overweight or obese. ▲ When the parent has a history of cardiovascular disease. ▲ When the child sleeps less than 8 hours. And that the relatively low socioeconomic level increases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome.
At the start of the study, children who were already overweight or obese had a 3.83-fold greater risk of metabolic syndrome than children who were in normal weight. Also, parents with a cardiovascular disease had a 1.28-fold increased risk of metabolic syndrome compared to those who did not.

 The incidence of childhood obesity is more than 90%.

Sleep time has also been shown to increase the risk of childhood adolescent metabolic syndrome. Pediatric adolescents who sleep less than 8 hours a day on average have a 1.93-fold increased risk of cardiovascular-badociated metabolic syndrome compared to children who sleep more than 9 hours a day.

The higher the socio-economic level of the family, the lower the risk of metabolic syndrome. Children and adolescents with a monthly average income of more than 3 million won but less than 5 million won reduced the risk of metabolic syndrome by only 25%, but the risk of children and adolescent metabolic syndrome of children over 5 million won decreased by 42%.

Professor Park Kyung-hee said, "The subjects of prevention and treatment of obesity in children and adolescents should include children from low-income families, obese children with overweight and those with a history of cardiovascular disease, and education contents should include sufficient sleep time in pediatric adolescents "He said. Professor Park explained, "The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents in Korea is increasing, so prevention and management measures are urgent."
The study was published in the April issue of the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood.
