SEATTLE – Police Chief Kathleen O & # 39; Toole will leave her post after more than three years as Seattle's first female police officer, Mayor Jenny Durkan plans to announce on Monday. [19659003] The news came in the form of a press release issued early on Monday. Durkan will make the official announcement at a press conference scheduled for later on Monday morning.

O & # 39; Toole will step down from December 31, said the media notice. Deputy Chief Carmen Best will be the interim police chief from January 1, 2018.

In his press conference, Durkan will also describe the next steps to select a permanent police chief and continue the police reforms.

O & # 39; Toole has overseen the Seattle Police Department and its 1,300 agents since July 2014, when it was approved by the City Council and sworn in by former Mayor Ed Murray.

During his tenure, he has grappled with a number of challenges, including Justice Reforms ordered by the department, controversial deadly shootings by officers, an increase in armed violence in South Seattle, and complaints about moonlighting police.

O & # 39; Toole, a former Boston police commissioner and former inspector general of the national police force of Ireland, was Seattle's first female head.

In addition, Durkan will announce the continued service of Barb Graff, director of emergency management, and Harold Scoggins, head of the Seattle fire department.
