In a 5,000 word article detailing the complex history of the “Snyder Cut” of League of Justice, one line sent fans into a mild frenzy: “He has re-recorded the ending with a hero cameo that will blow fans away.”
That quote comes from Vanity fairit is recent, complete article about the film and the movement, culminating in the March 18 release Zack Snyder’s Justice League, to four hours completion of a Snyder project left in 2017 And he’s been back ever since, after a surge of encouragement from fans. But that’s another history.
This story is about that teased cameo. The line was picked up on internet blogs and speculation was rampant as to what DC Comics character it might be; many were leaning toward one of the Green Lanterns. The theorizing got so great, in fact, a potential candidate, Ryan Reynolds, addressed it on Twitter.
Well io9 spoke to a source with knowledge of the movie and we know who the cameo really is. It’s cool, yes, but you might want to lower your expectations just a bit.
According to our source, the cameo is none other than DC’s J’onn J’onzz, aka Martian Manhunter.
Now, fans might be thinking “Wait, it can’t be him. We already knew it Martian Detective it was in the movie. The actor himself confirmed it ”. That’s true. You may recall that actor Harry Lennix played General Swanwick in 2013 Iron Man and from 2016 Batman v Superman. Snyder intended for that character to eventually become the green shapeshifting hero. He has also worked with League of Justice director Joss Whedon in Doll’s House.
In recent weeks, Lennix even spoke to Variety to reveal who filmed the motion capture for Snyder’s League of Justice. “[I got a call from Zack that said] “Hey, when can you come in and shoot?” So it was great, ”Lennix told the store. “I found out it was a possibility, or at least that Martian Manhunter was going to be in it, when she revealed through the storyboard that Martha Kent is coming to visit Lois, and then after she leaves, she reveals herself as, in fact, Calvin Swanwick or the Martian Manhunter. This is how I knew. “
The actor is referring to Snyder’s storyboards. revealed in october 2019 of the scene with Martian Manhunter reveals himself. Snyder had previously shot half the scene, but he only needed the Lennix part. It seems possible that that is the scene in question here. So if all of this was already in-universe, why was it called something that will “blow the mind of hardcore fans?” From what we can tell, Vanity Fair was only being averse to spoilers for an audience that is not privy to the latest superhero news. But we can confirm that the reference refers to the appearance of Martian Manhunter.
To be fair, not everyone reads Variety. Not everyone saw Zack Snyder’s Vero two years ago. A lot of people won’t know what’s coming and those people will certainly be shocked (which is why we put this reveal behind a spoiler bar today). Not the mind-blowing Ryan Reynolds type, of course, the new supergirl, or any other fun, multiverse reformulating the predictions that have dominated social networks in the last 24 hours. But nonetheless, it’s pretty good. Another case where Snyder finally managed to complete a vision that he had planned for years.
Zack snyder League of Justice hits HBO Max on March 18.
Correction 02/23/2021, 1:35 pm ET: The original version of this post incorrectly stated that the movie would be in black and white. Snyder’s original rough cut was in black and white, but the final version will not be. Also, Lennix worked with Whedon on Dollhouse and not Justice League. We are sorry for the mistakes and have corrected them.
