Luca Guadagnino, currently on Oscar Boulevard for the dazzling "Call me by your name," will direct Jennifer Lawrence in "Burial Rites," Variety has learned. Lawrence will produce, in addition to starring in the true crime drama. TriStar Pictures, a division of Sony Pictures, has worldwide rights to the image.
The film is based on the Hannah Kent novel of 2013 and focuses on Agnes Magnusdottir (Lawrence), the last woman to be executed publicly in Iceland in 1830. Agnes was sentenced to death for killing two men and setting fire to his house. The story takes place while Agnes awaits the confirmation of her death sentence by the superior court, a period of time that finds her forging emotional and romantic bonds reluctantly, while reflecting on her alleged crimes.
