Jailed farmer apparently hunted in search of Arkansas jogger

A farmer suspected of capital murder, kidnapping and rape in the case of death and disappearance of a 25-year-old woman was jailed on Monday without bond, last seen walking in rural northeast Arkansas. 28-year-old Quake Lavalin made his first court arrest on Monday afternoon following the death of Sydney Sutherland.

Sutherland, who was a nurse according to her Facebook page, was last seen jogging about 80 miles northeast of Little Rock, near Newport. An autopsy was found in the area on Friday, and officials confirmed on Saturday that it was Sutherland.

Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas said Friday that Sutherland knew the person who was arrested, but presented some details about what might have happened. Several outlets, including People, reported that Lwelin joined a Facebook group dedicated to finding Sutherland after the disappearance.

Judge Harold Ervin made his next court appearance on October 1 for Lavalin of Jonesboro, who did not answer reporters’ questions after arriving in the courtyard on Monday.

In 2016, Quake and his father won the Jackson County Farm Family of the Year, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.

“I’ve always worked on the farm,” he said at the time. “I’ve started running … a yellow Ford for Dad. We all have our own fields, but we help each other.”
