It’s official: Jimmy Garoppolo might be 49ers’ No. 2 Sunday

Tom Brady’s longtime backup will start his 49ers’ tenure as C.J. Beathard’s caddy.

On Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that just-acquired Jimmy Garoppolo would be the second-string quarterback on Sunday towards the Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium.

If Beathard is sidelined, Shanahan indicated Garoppolo is able to run a portion of the offense. He would presumably put on a wristband with performs on it that he’s had in observe since he was acquired in a commerce with the Patriots on Monday.

“He’s worked real hard at it and I think he’s gotten more comfortable each day,” Shanaahn stated. “He’s definitely not there yet, but if that situation presents itself we’ll have a plan to go with him so he can function.”

Given his unfamiliarity with the offense, and with the Pro Bowl left sort out Joe Staley (eye) sidelined for a minimum of the subsequent two video games, the 49ers aren’t anticipating Garoppolo to play Sunday. Shanahan stated he thought of selling undrafted rookie Nick Mullens from the observe squad, however the 49ers’ rash of accidents prevented it.

“Nick is ready to help our offense function,” Shanahan stated. “But in order to do something like that you have to cut another player. And with all the injuries we have on our team right now … to cut another player would be tough.”

Meanwhile, Staley, 33, the staff’s longest-tenured participant, credited the staff’s entrance workplace for accelerating the rebuilding course of by buying Garoppolo.

“The quarterback situation is taken care of so you can look elsewhere,” Staley stated. “That’s exciting. That’s a very important piece in the NFL to have. A quarterback, obviously, kind of drives an offense. Real excited to have him here.”

No onerous emotions: Eagles defensive sort out Fletcher Cox, who wasn’t fined for his hit that broke Staley’s orbital socket Sunday, has reached out to Staley since their collision.

“At the time, I told him I was pretty upset,” Staley stated. “I felt like he didn’t have to go the head there in that situation. I’ve also been in the situation where that stuff happens fast on the football field. I know him. I know he’s not that kind of player. … I know he didn’t go out there and try to break my face.”

The tentative plan is for Staley to return when the 49ers host the Seahawks on Nov. 26. He will put on a tinted visor to guard his eye.

“Hopefully, I’ll … look real intimidating,” Staley stated. “Maybe there will be a new moniker for me. Just kind of rebrand myself: bad-bad offensive lineman.”

Neither Cox nor Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham had been flagged for penalties on performs that injured Staley and broad receiver Pierre Garcon, respectively. Bradham appeared to push Garcon when he was already out of bounds within the second quarter.

“We did lose two our of our best players on our offense on two plays that were things that we felt a flag should have been thrown on,” Shanahan stated.
