JERUSALEM – Israeli Prime Minister says the demonstrations taking place in Iran show that international economic pressure against the Islamic Republic is working.
Benjamin Netanyahu said in a military ceremony on Thursday that the decision of the United States to withdraw from the international nuclear agreement with Iran and re-impose sanctions is causing "economic disruption" and undermining public support for the government.
"Not only has the reimposition of the sanctions not united the Iranian public around the regime, the opposite is happening," he said. "Many in Iran understand that the Ayatollah regime is wasting precious resources on foreign military subversion instead of investing in civilian needs in the country."
Israel and Iran are archenemies. Netanyahu has been an outspoken opponent of the nuclear agreement and welcomed the withdrawal of the United States.
