Smartphone: Huawei aims to capture the premium phone market

NEW DELHI: Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei aims to be the best selling premium smart phone in India, currently governed by Samsung, OnePlus and Apple, and recently entered the segment again with its Huawei P20 and P20 Pro phones said a senior official.

The company is making a concerted effort in the high-end segment through its "Huawei" brand smartphones, while its sub-brand, Honor, continues to compete with Xiaomi and Oppo in the sub-Rs category 20K

"Our goal is to become the best player in the premium segment in India," said ET Allen Wang, director of the Huawei India Consumer Business Group product center.

OnePlus was the leading premium smart phone brand (Rs 30,000 or more) in India, even as the global premium phone market grew 19% year-on-year in the April-June quarter as more consumers upgraded to launches emblematic of 2018 of different brands of Android In India.

Huawei along with its sub-brand Honor had a 3% share in India's smartphone segment, with the bulk of sales represented by Honor.

"Huawei captured 4% of the premium smartphone segment during the first quarter of its launch, driven by the Honor 10 and P20 shipments, and is using online as a channel to target premium smartphone users in cities of Level 1, "said Tarun Pathak, director of research at Counterpoint.

Wang said that the Indian and Chinese markets are similar in terms of consumer trends.
