According to data from the US Census Bureau. UU., The gender wage gap is around 19.5% throughout the country. (For example, if a man earns $ 50,000 a year, his co-worker with the same role could earn $ 40,250.)
But the wage gap differs depending on several factors, especially race and location.
A recent report by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), a non-profit organization that advocates for gender equality, analyzes wage disparities in the top 25 metropolitan areas of the United States. UU

"Global wage rates by gender" compare average wages for women and men (of all races) who work full-time, throughout the year. By dividing the Census data among four different races for women, the AAUW also analyzed how those average earnings compare to those of white men.
The analysis shows that there are large disparities between the salaries of men and women in each of these cities, with the widest gaps that seem to exist between Hispanic women and men whites. In Houston, Texas, Hispanic women earn about 35% of what white men earn. Detroit, where Asian women tend to earn 2% more than white men, is an atypical case.
Of the 25 meters, the narrowest gender wage gap is generally found in Tampa, Florida, where women earn approximately 89% of the average salary for men. That said, the proportions for Hispanic and black women are 61% and 65%, respectively, compared to white men. There, white women earn 80% of the wages of white men.
The gender pay gap seems to be especially bad in technology centers, such as Seattle (the home of Amazon) and the Bay Area (the home of Silicon Valley). As BI's Avery Hartmans reported earlier, a 2016 survey of 10,000 US tech employees found a general gender pay disparity of 30% in Seattle and 20% in San Francisco. In Seattle, the report found that women who work in technology earn about $ 110,000, while men earn $ 143,000.
Since 1979, the gender wage gap has been reduced, but at the same time, it has remained relatively stable for the last 15 years or so. Several experts have analyzed what perpetuates the disparity, including taking a break to raise their children, and the fact that few women often work in the highest-paid industries.
But as the Pew Research Center notes this week, another factor – gender discrimination at work – is harder to quantify. In a survey conducted in 2017, approximately four out of 10 working women report experiencing gender discrimination, and the highest percentage report that they earn a lower salary than their male counterparts for the same work.
