Iran says it may be an alternative to Suez after the ship got stuck

Iran wants to take advantage of the chaos in the Suez Canal by proposing itself as a way to unite Europe and Asia. “An Iranian diplomat says the North-South International Transportation Corridor (INSTC) can serve as a low-risk, cost-effective alternative to the Suez Canal, which has been blocked in recent days, causing billions of dollars in damage all the days”. says Iran’s Press TV.

Kazem Jalali, the diplomat in question, is the Iranian ambassador in Moscow. He says that goods can reach Europe via Iran in 20 days and costs can be reduced. “Therefore, it is a superior option to replace the Suez Canal in transit,” added Jalali. Iran has been looking to develop road and rail connections and rehabilitate its ports. “Iran, along with India and Russia, is pushing forward the maritime and rail corridor that could substantially reduce the time and cost of shipping goods from India to Europe,” according to the report. Turkey also wants to use Russia and Iran to reach China for a trade corridor. All these states want to make sure that Europe depends on them. All of them are authoritarian and want to dominate trade routes to play a bigger role and, in the view of Iran and Russia, reduce American and Western power in general.

Tehran is now talking about 7,200 km. multimode route with India and Russia. Iran wants to use the port of Chabahar as a link with India. Recent Iranian reports have increasingly discussed investment in railways and ports and also seek greater connections with India and Pakistan, as well as Turkey.
