You cannot see an entire handset in the video; This is just the chassis of an iPhone 12 Pro. But, assuming it is legitimate – and it certainly looks like from other leaks we’ve already seen – it confirms a few things in terms of design and features.
First, and most obvious, is that the shell has the same finish as the current iPhone 11 Pro, with both stainless steel edges and a matte glass back plate retained for generations. The camera array also looks familiar, with three large circles for the main lens arranged in a triangular pattern in the top left corner of the handset.
Here it is Official iPhone 12 Pro Chassis Leaked. Confirms mostly the same camera with the new LiDAR placement, 5G antenna such as flat sides, magnet cutouts and smart connectors? This confirms that the 6.1 Pro model will also get LiDAR. October cannot come soon. pic.twitter.com/YifSX7SWxhSeptember 11, 2020
iPhone 12 Pro LiDAR Confirmed
What’s different here is the number of small circles, which have doubled from two. One of them is an LED flash, as with every iPhone of the last decade, but the other probably has a cutout for the iPhone 12’s LiDAR sensor. This is interesting, as some rumors suggested that the distance measuring technique might be reserved for the iPhone 12 Pro Max
Based on various leaks, LiDAR sensors use flight data to more accurately measure distances to time objects. This feature will reportedly help to create better looking portraits while giving better auto focus and better low-light performance. Furthermore, like the LiDAR sensor of the iPad Pro, this technology should enhance the experience in a growing array of iPhone AR apps.
iPhone 12 5G One Lock
There’s not a great deal more you can get from a simple chassis, in addition to the novelty of seeing an iPhone from the inside. But there are some other changes as well: the SIM tray has moved to the lower left side of the handset, and a new cutout appears on the right hand side, which may end the 5G antenna.
The iPhone 12 Pro that we’re seeing here is one of only four iPhones that Apple is reportedly to launch later this year. Expect 5.4-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Max.
While all four iPhone 12 models should feature Apple’s brand new 5nm A14 bionic processor, the Pro versions will benefit from a telephoto camera, as well as the aforementioned LiDAR depth sensor. Unfortunately, the latest word is that the 120Hz display has been axed on the iPhone 12 Pro model.
The latest rumors, pointing to an October incident only for iPhones, are completely different from next week’s Apple Watch 6-centric launch. While Apple typically bundles all of its hardware at a September event, Coronavirus has disrupted things to such an extent that it seems it wasn’t practical for 2020.
