S T. LOUIS (KCRG) – Iowa fighter Austin DeSanto will not participate in team ceremonies Saturday night following an incident with NCAA media officials that occurred after their bout on Saturday.
Iowa Wrestling coach Tom Brands issued the following statement on Saturday:
“Austin DeSanto will not be participating in the NCAA All-Americans Parade or medal ceremony on Saturday night. DeSanto behaved inappropriately towards NCAA media officials while coming off the mat this afternoon and after consulting with the NCAA Wrestling Committee and our administration, we have made an institutional decision to keep him out of tonight’s activities. ”
DeSanto issued the following statement in response:
“My behavior towards NCAA media officials prior to the post-game interview was incorrect and I owe everyone involved a sincere apology. My language and behavior were inappropriate and unforgivable. I have spoken with Tom and I understand and agree with the decision. ”
DeSanto won two games on Saturday and finished his tournament 5-1, ranking third.
Spencer Lee, Jaydin Eierman and Michael Kemerer of Iowa are ready to fight in the championship bouts Saturday night at 6:00 pm ESPN.
