Iowa Lottery announces giveaway promotion for unclaimed $1 million prize | News

(Des Moines): Iowa Lottery players will have the opportunity to win an unclaimed prize of $ 1 million with a new promotion this spring.

Iowa Lottery President Matt Strawn announced Monday morning that his agency will launch the "Woo Hoo A Million For You Sweepstakes" from May 29 to June 18. The unclaimed prize of $ 1 million is the result of a winning Powerball ticket sold at a Casey & # 39; s in downtown Iowa Nevada last April. Strawn says the winner had a year to claim the prize, but no one took a step forward.

"As it approached April 11, 2019, the Iowa Lottery repeatedly issued reminders and updates to try to find the winner," said Strawn. "In fact, a little over a month ago, on March 11, 2019, the Iowa Lottery held a press conference at the same store in Casey, Nevada, where they won the Powerball ticket, which attracted tremendous coverage. of news throughout the state, no winner came forward. "

Strawn says that all Powerball tickets purchased during the three-week promotion will give you an entry to the contest for the $ 1 million unclaimed prize.

"Any Powerball ticket purchased in Iowa from May 29 to June 11 will be eligible to enter the promotion," Strawn said. "Each Powerball ticket entered will count as one entry to the promotion, regardless of the purchase price of the ticket."

Strawn says the unclaimed prize should be used as part of the lottery's prize and promotion group.

"The state code actually requires unclaimed prizes to go to prize promotions and prize groups, so we're operating in a manner consistent with the state code," Strawn said. "With the revenues generated by the state lottery, policymakers make those decisions about how best to allocate those resources to state needs."

As time was running out to claim the original prize, Strawn says his office was already developing ideas on how to give it away.

"We plan for every eventuality, so we've spent a little time in the past few weeks while we were aggressively out there trying to help identify the winner who is trying to organize a promotion that we believe is consistent, fun and can draw the attention of all, "said Strawn. "It's something that everyone, frankly, has a chance to win, there's nothing simpler than a ticket, a ticket and a chance to win a million dollars."

In the last fiscal year, the Iowa Lottery reported more than $ 1.4 million in unclaimed earnings.
