India estimated 6.4 million Kovid-19 infections in early May: national seroserway

The stratification of districts as zero cases (15 districts), low (22 districts), medium (16) and high (17) was done on 25 April based on the perceived number of Kovid-19 cases.

Based on an overall adjusted seroprevalence of 0.73 percent and the reported number of Kovid-19 cases, it was estimated that there were 82–130 infections in India for every confirmed case of RT-PCR of Kovid-19.

As a part of the survey, a total of 30,283 houses were visited from 700 groups in 70 districts in four sections. About one-quarter (25.9 percent) of the groups surveyed were from urban areas. The report stated that a total of 28,000 people attended.

About half (48.5 percent) of the participants were aged between 18 and 45 and 51.5 percent (14,390) were women. In all, 18.7 percent of participants had a high risk of exposure to potentially infected individuals.

The survey mentions that Kovid-19 cases can be detected in zero stratum districts due to poor testing as well as poor access to testing laboratories.

In four of the 15 districts in this stratum, Kovid-19 testing laboratories were not available at the district headquarters and samples were transported to state headquarters hospitals for diagnosis.
