First things first: the most retweeted tweet of 2017 – and for that matter, of all times – was for a teenager who wanted Wendy & # 39; s to give her free chicken nuggets.
But this is not another piece about the chicken Nuggets Boy, so let's move on to the second most retweeted tweet of the year. It's because of a guy who used to be president.
Obama tweeted : "No one is born hating another person because of the color of their skin or their origin or their religion …"
This tweet was published after the white nationalist demonstration in August in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a 20-year-old man with a long history of sympathizing with Nazi views was arrested for allegedly plowing a car against a crowd of protesters against racism, killing one person and wounding more than a dozen.
Obama's tweet in response to Charlottesville was retweeted 1.7 million times and has 4.5 million likes. Shortly after its publication, it became the most popular tweet on Twitter, ever.
In 2017, when the current president regularly handles the entire day's news cycle by tweeting a lot of things before dawn, President Donald Trump is, unsurprisingly, at the top of the list of leaders elected worldwide and American politicians. The messages he embraced, such as #MAGA, #TrumpTrain and #BoycottNFL, for example, are some of the main activism hashtags of the year, according to Twitter.
But @RealDonaldTrump is absent from the 10 most retweeted tweets of the year and the most popular Twitter tweets of 2017. Meanwhile, his predecessor appears a total of five times on both lists.
Obama tweeted three of the 10 most retweeted Twitter tweets of the year, including two from the official @POTUS account before leaving the office (Obama's Twitter story as president is now archived at @ POTUS44):
Obama tweeted : "It was the honor of my life to serve you, you made me a better leader and a better man"
Obama tweeted : "Thanks for everything." My last question is the same as the first I ask you to believe, not in my ability to generate change, but in yours. "
Other tweets in the Top 10 included Ariana Grande's response after the massacre at her concert in Mancheste, Great Britain, and a couple of tweets raising money to help those recovering from the hurricane in Houston.
A tweet on the list of retweetes does not mention Trump, but it's about him.
LeBron James tweeted "U bum @ StephenCurry30 he said he would not go! So, then, it's not an invitation, going to the White House was a great honor until you showed up!"
Trump and Obama use Twitter in a very different way: Obama, now under @BarackObama, has almost 100 million followers and does not tweet much. His tweets about Charlottesville and John McCain's cancer diagnosis were timely and supportive messages during major news events.
Trump, meanwhile, has 44 million followers and tweets all the time mostly. It has had a huge impact on Twitter this year, but not because of any tweet about the rest.
People talk about Trump, obviously. Responding to his tweets has become performative for both his followers and the #Resist group. However, it is difficult for any of your tweets to grab attention in the way that Obama's most popular tweets have. If you are talking about a Trump tweet, there is probably another to talk in about five minutes.
