TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Former Washburn Ichabod football player Corey Ballentine paid tribute to his only teammate and "true friend" Dwane Simmons in his first public statement since Simmons was killed and Ballentine was wounded in a shootout in central Topeka during the weekend.
"God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers. "I love you forever," Ballentine said in a tweet Monday afternoon.
"Thank you for being a true friend who raised me, corrected me when I was wrong and accepted my faults," he continued. "Thanks for being a brother to me. Thank you for letting me experience your life. "
Ballentine suffered non-fatal injuries in Sunday morning's shooting at a party near SW 13th and Lane St. Washburn University said he is expected to recover.
No one has been arrested in connection with his death. The Topeka police are encouraging everyone who was there to call the investigators at 785-368-9400, or Shawnee Co. Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007. Tips for Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous.
