With “All I Want for Christmas Is You”. Below, check out our interview, via video call with Carrie wearing a silver gown surrounded by snow-covered silver Christmas trees, in a scene created for an ice queen.
Mariah, you are especially watching the festivities!
If I’m not watching the celebration, Katie, I don’t know who’s going to celebrate. [Laughs]
What do we know about you Magical christmas special By now, you are helping your “great friend” Santa solve the Holiday Cheer Crisis. Where does this concept come from?
Of course we have to get involved with Santa and make sure that everything he is trying to do, all the Christmas cheer, is being brought to everyone. So we cannot let the malfunction of the existing place in the world completely end, which we do every year – which I know – I am Do it every year. We talked with Apple and we were like, let’s see, let’s just make sure Santa is good and we’ll figure it out! And it’s going to be a magical Christmas special, and I’m here for it.
In addition to Santa, you have some other great friends coming, including Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson “Oh Santa!” How do you remodel a song for a trio?
I wrote “Oh Santa!” To my album Merry christmas second you, Which was a follow-up to my first Christmas album – we have several [Laughs] – And so I think it was all about the actual event, of course, “Oh Santa!” With Jennifer and Ari, but it was like, how do I see it as a producer? How do I see these vowels with different textures, what are they? Because basically, I was blending in with myself, which is one of my favorite things, but to be able to work with different vocal textures and play with it and rejuvenate it it was good. Then the same thing happened. And visually, in particular, it really feels like a girl group moment. I think we all had a good time together. This was the fun part about it.[Mariah Carey’s “Oh Santa!” video, featuring Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson, premieres at midnight ET below.]
The special also has many other great moments, such as Tiffany Haddish narrating the story, “The Night Before Christmas”. Come on, can it really be better than this? He is one of the funniest people I have had the privilege of getting to know. … and Billy Eicher, hilarious. Do you know billy?
Of course! Your Billy on the street Last Christmas with her was incredible, so I’m glad you’re reuniting.
me too! We had a lot of fun He was like light during this time. As much as we love all of this, it also takes a lot of energy to show up and be like, “I want to be festive!” it need. And I like that his cynicism and confusion, his character he created for this, is such a contrast to me. I really love what he did.
Misty Copeland brings her talent to this special and just adds a lot with “Sugar Plum Fairy” – which I remade, and now we’ve remade it, and it’s longer and it’s my voice. Is like playing an instrument with. , So I really enjoyed it.
So many people showed up and worked really, really hard. [Carey’s twins] Roke and Roe particularly well, Macal-Michelle Harris, who lives by us Mixed-ish, Which I wrote [theme] Song for him. He is friends with Ro and Ro, so I love his character [in the special]. We are celebrating Christmas together and she is also enjoying Christmas during the year and even though, in particular, her family does not have a tree this year. It is a different kind of moment for him, passing for a child. And I wrote this new song, “Little Maria’s Theme,” in honor of my inner child … and then “Little Mimi’s Theme”, so it books [soundtrack]. I literally wrote it in the car with my dear friend Daniel, driving home from filming by the way. because when [Harris’ character] Finally she gets Jezo back, she puts the ornament on the tree and it’s a golden butterfly ornament, and it just felt strange to me, it didn’t feel balanced. So we wrote this thing and we put it together in a car ride – a first for me. I haven’t done that yet. But I really love that he inspired for me.
Whatever I’m going out with is just because we want you to see the specials and see some Easter eggs.
Well Jermaine Dupri and Snoop…
Can you talk about what they are doing in particular or what songs they are doing?
So it was a last minute thing. Jasmine and I wrote “Oh Santa!” Together. We have also explained “Here comes Santa Claus” -slash- “right down Santa Claus Lane” -slash- “housemate top celebration” – this is a long title [Laughs], Because sometimes I put different songs together and make it one thing. When we wrote that song, there is a section that goes [she sings] “gather round.” I was like, “Hmm, that might be something brilliant to explain again.” And I talked to JD, and there was someone who was suggesting Snoop, so I said, “Let me just call Jermaine,” because instead of going through all this bureaucracy, she and I had a relationship. Closer, and Snoop was there the next day. He did his part. This is my new thing. I am living for it I am waiting to hear from behind [Snoop] About a very specific Christmas idea that I have, and I’m getting away with it, because I didn’t even talk to him about it. But he showed – I am not going to say what he was wearing, but he instilled a belief in me that I am ready to learn about the world. This is a big deal. I’m telling you, Katie! I wish someone had suggested this to me, but I can’t do it. He is more apt to do so.
Okay, we’ll wait for more on that! You mentioned that your twins are also special. Do we get to hear the song Ro and Ro?
They sing a little at the end of “All I Want”. I actually recorded a song with them when they were 6 which we didn’t release. They were like, “Why didn’t we leave him?” It was so cute, because it was when Rocky had an accent – not an accent, but in fact some letters can’t be pronounced yet – and they’re both singing on it. So one of these days one needs to encourage me to release, but other stuff is going on right now. But yes, I wanted to do more with them in terms of performance, but they are definitely moving forward, they are acting in it. So I like that. I loved incorporating them into this festive world that we created.
Now that you have almost a full year to reflect on this, can we talk about how amazing and crazy it is to see “All I Want For Christmas Is You” on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time last year “Hit number 1. , 25 years after its release?
This was a high point for me, career-wise, because of how much I love Christmas, and that’s partly because I’ve always loved it so much. But I had to go through my difficult hurdles, at least, to get started in childhood and this business was so young and never really about that unified family or those kinds of holidays that I always felt like U see it. TV. …
So it was number 1 in 2019 with “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, a moment where I was just watching myself in the light of the Christmas tree at 3 am and really taking it to human level, because You spend your whole life for something. And … it’s so exciting because it’s on Christmas, which is my favorite, but also like, which is a valid thing. I never knew that people were going to adapt the song that I wrote – my first Christmas song I ever wrote. How did I know she was going to be a thing every year? I could not know that. And I’ve grown up loving it more, because I’d always listened through it and picked it up over Christmas against all the other Christmas songs, like, “Why didn’t I change this part? I want to I could do that? At that. “Because I had done this long ago, so was youth. But still, it makes me happy every year.
