The makers of a new video game set in an ‘alternative reality’ where Nazi Germany won World War II has been forced to censor Adolf Hitler – by removing his moustache.
The Nazi leader appears clean shaven in the German version of the game Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, in order to skirt the country’s anti-Nazi laws.
The first-person shooter game is set in the year 1961 of an alternate reality in which Germany won World War II, and sees Hitler funding and directing a new play.
Censored: The German version of Wolfenstein II, left, has Hitler appearing with no moustache and the Swastika in the background replaced with a made-up symbol
But in German trailers promoting the game, producers Bethesda have chosen to remove the Hitler’s trademark facial hair.
Since 1945, the Swastika and all other Nazi symbols have been banned in Germany, and the game has taken serious steps to avoid falling foul of the law.
Hitler isn’t even acknowledged by name, and other characters refer to him as ‘My Chancellor’, or ‘mein Kanzler.’
Swastikas are replaced by a new, made up three pronged symbol.
In the game, released earlier this month, America has fallen to the Nazi occupation and gamers must rally the resistance and liberate the USA.
Shaved: The German and American versions see two different ‘Hitlers’

Hitler who? The German version of the game does not even acknowledged Adolf Hitler by name, and he is referred to as ‘The Chancellor’
English-speaking versions of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus use phrases like ‘mein fuhrer’, but the German release shied away from the country’s dark past.
Gamers in Germany labelled the censorship ’embarrbading’ and claimed producers had deprived users of a historically accurate experience.
One gamer, who did not want to be named, said: ‘They deprived us of a great story by removing the amazing voice acting, both English and German, and replacing it with a low quality dub that changes the narrative into a nonsensical, patronising mess.
‘And then having the gall to offer it to us thinking we wouldn’t notice these obvious changes, that’s the censorship.’
It is likely that Bethesda will have considered the cost of violating German anti-Nazi laws – which can land individuals with up to three years behind bars and a fine – before censoring its latest Nazi game.
A gamer said: ‘They should’ve just put a paper bag on his head with ‘not Hitler’ written on it.’
In a walkthrough of the game uploaded to YouTube , several characters are seen practicing lines for a Nazi propaganda performance while on Venus
When he asks the group of actors if they’ve read his book, Mein Kampf, Ronald jumps out of his seat and says: ‘I loved it Mr Hitler. Super good’
Another added: ‘Seriously they removed his f***ing moustache?
‘I can’t even think of anything to say about that because of how ridiculous of an alteration that is.’
Bethesda, who have removed the trailer showing Hitler’s face from their German YouTube channel, have been approached for a comment.
Yesterday, the game was accused of showing President Ronald Reagan working as a Nazi collaborator.
During the game, the character of Adolf Hitler enters the room where a group of actors are reading the play and suddenly pulls out a gun.
When he asks the group of actors if they’ve read his book, Mein Kampf, Ronald jumps out of his seat and says: ‘I loved it Mr Hitler. Super good.’
Hitler becomes offended that Ronald didn’t call him ‘Mein Fuhrer’, and asks him who he is, and if he’s Jewish.
Ronald responds: ‘No Mein Fuhrer, I’m from Arizona.’
Suddenly, Hitler shoots Ronald several times in front of the three other men, leaving him to bleed out on the ground.

The name, era and acting career has made gamers suggest that the character is supposed to be a young Ronald Reagan, before he took office in the United States and was still taking acting jobs
When the camera cuts out, viewers can see the back of Ronald’s chair. While half of the chair is covered, the last three letters of his last name read ‘gan’.

The mention that the character is from Arizona is noteworthy, as Reagan was never badociated with the state specifically.
One redditor said: ‘That’s the big hole in this, Ronny wasn’t from Arizona. He was born in western Illinois, moved to Iowa for a bit, and then ultimately went out to California.
‘Also, when the game takes place Reagan should be 51, and that guy looks and acts a little young for that.’
