That means Californians over 50 or those who work in some jobs that are considered essential may have to wait weeks longer to get even a first dose of protection.
“It’s too early to tell,” said Dr. Tomas Aragon, director of the California Department of Public Health. “We are going to look at the offer, we have analysts who are projecting all of this and we will see how many people get vaccinated. That really helps determine when we will make the next announcement.”

In the meantime, California will target its existing supply to those currently eligible, especially in communities hardest hit by the virus and where vaccine distribution is being delayed.
For Californians ages 50-65 who hope to be eligible sooner rather than later, it appears that vaccine sites may be closed to them for at least a few more weeks, when states like Texas, Indiana and Ohio have already turned 50.
“Here, at least in Northern California, we’ve been adhering to everything, social distancing, masks,” said Maureen O’Regan, who told us she has news of younger friends and family in Texas who are already vaccinated. “So I hate being behind on vaccinations, when we’ve really done everything that we should have done all the time.”

If California doesn’t make the next group eligible for another month, the question arises as to whether the state can really be ready for adults of all age groups to be eligible by May 1, the expected date announced last week. by President Joe Biden.
“So the real question is, when will there be enough vaccines to open to the general population?” said Dr. Mike Wasserman, who sits on the California Vaccine Advisory Committee. “I think it will be around May at some point, but I don’t know if we know the exact date.”
