INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR): Indiana is one of the states named in a new recall of ground beef from packers in Illinois and Georgia after an outbreak of e-coli.
The Centers for Disease Control is conducting a multi-state investigation that began on March 28, 2019, when Kentucky and Georgia officials notified the CDC of the outbreak.
At this time, no supplier, distributor or common brand of ground beef has been identified that could explain the entire outbreak.
On April 24, 2019, Grant Park Packing in Franklin Park, Illinois, withdrew approximately 53,200 pounds of raw ground beef products.
A person in Indiana was confirmed with a case of E. coli O103.
Of the 177 people who reported symptoms, 21 were hospitalized since the last outbreak. No deaths have been reported.
The recalled products were sold in 40-pound bulk cartons from "North Star Imports & Sales, LLC. 100% BULK BULK MEAT 80% LEAN / 20% FAT "marked" FOR INSTITUTIONAL USE ONLY "with a lot code GP.1051.18 and packing dates 10/30/2018, 10/31/2018 and 01/11 / 2018.
The recalled products are labeled with the establishment number "EST. 21781 "within the USDA mark of inspection on the boxes.
K2D Foods, which operates as Colorado Premium Foods, in Carrollton, Georgia, recalled approximately 113,424 pounds of raw ground beef products on April 23, 2019.
The recalled products were sold in two of 24 pounds. Packages vacuum packed in cardboard boxes containing "GROUND BEEF PUCK" unprocessed, with "Use Thru" dates of 4/14/19, 4/17/19, 4/20/19, 4/23 19, 4/28/19 and 4/30/19.
The recalled products are labeled with the establishment number "EST. 51308 "within the USDA mark of inspection.
Officials continue to collect products for testing and continue their tracking investigations to determine the source of ground beef supplied to grocery stores and restaurants where they ate sick people.
Consumers should handle ground meat safely and cook it well.
