Gordon Ramsay has revealed that he underwent knee surgery after injuring himself while running and was told he had arthritis.
The 54-year-old chef, who often runs marathons and takes long bike rides, admitted that his doctor told him he ‘needs to start slowing down’ in a new interview with The Sun.
In addition to revealing his recent operation, Gordon also spoke about the impressive culinary skills of his good friend David Beckham, saying that the former footballer is a ‘true foodie’ and stating that he would win Great British Bake Off if he ever appeared on the show.
‘It was fucking painful’: Gordon Ramsay has revealed that he underwent knee surgery after injuring himself while running in London, and was told by doctors he had arthritis.
Gordon told the publication that he had needed surgery after he was recently injured while exercising in London.
He said: ‘I just got off two weeks on crutches as I had meniscus surgery. I did it running up the hill in Richmond Park, running up. It was fucking painful.
“And when the X-rays came back to me, the doctor said, ‘He has arthritis in his knee’ … I’m a little afraid to stop, but I know I’ll have to slow down at some point.”
The notoriously active chef added that he didn’t want to be lazy in confinement and get mad at the world, so he made sure to keep training, calling it his ‘liberation’ amid a busy work life.
High praise: The 54-year-old chef also spoke about his good friend David Beckham’s impressive culinary skills, saying the former footballer is a ‘true foodie’ in a new interview (pictured from 2019)
And as if he wasn’t busy enough, Gordon also revealed that he discussed the idea of doing a food show with his good friend David Beckham.
He said: ‘David is a real foodie. The last thing he made me was a risotto. He acquired these skills in Milan, and is now a prolific baker and Harper is an avid baker too.
Singing his friend’s praises, Gordon added that if the former footballer participated in the Great British Bake Off he would certainly win the competition before adding that David has “incredible attention to detail.”
Gordon recalled one of his weekend trips to Napa in California and said that David often goes to a chocolate shop and spends hours meticulously decorating cakes.
Always on the go: Gordon is very active and often takes long bike rides, but said his doctor told him he ‘needs to start slowing down’ (pictured with his youngest son, Oscar, last summer)
Busy Man: In addition to staying active in the confinement, Gordon has been preparing for the launch of his new game show Bank Balance (pictured after a dip in the sea last summer)
In another part of his interview, Gordon admitted that he “studied” hosts Bradley Walsh and Jeremy Clarkson as he prepared to host his new Bank Balance game show.
And while awaiting the launch of the program, Gordon admitted that the closings of the past year have caused “devastation” in his restaurant business.
Speaking frankly about the financial loss and the impact on his staff, the TV chef said he suffered a 57.5 million pound drop during the pandemic.
He also admitted that he feels great pressure to support his staff, and especially those starting their careers, as they all need to make a living.
Gordon has kept busy during the confinement, spending a lot of time with his children and riding his bikes from their homes in London and Cornwall.
Friends: Singing the cooking and baking praises of his friend David, Gordon also revealed that he has talked about doing a food show with the former footballer (Ramsay and Beckham’s offspring are shown together in 2018)
Speaking about his family, the caring dad said he wants to keep them all grounded and never buys first-class seats for his teens on airplanes.
He also revealed that over the past four years two of his children, although he did not reveal which ones, have been volunteers at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Gordon recently revealed that he had to cancel more than 22,000 reservations for his restaurants in December before England sank into its third closure.
The star, who owns 35 restaurants across the UK, said that the effect Covid has had on the hotel industry is ‘devastating’ but remains optimistic that his business could reopen at Easter.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Gordon said he plans to open even more restaurants when the closure is eased, following reports of the government’s plan to allow pubs and restaurants to reopen in May.
Family: Gordon is married to his wife Tana and is the father of twins Jack and Holly, Megan, Tilly and Oscar.
Gordon admitted that thousands of reservations at his business were removed when Level 3 restrictions in December forced many restaurants to close just weeks after reopening after the second closure.
Weeks later, the government put the entire country on lockdown, with no set date as to when pubs and restaurants can reopen.
He told Graham: ‘It’s devastating. When you think about breaking bread and having fun with friends and family, it’s tragic not to have that. ‘
The Hell’s Kitchen star added: ‘When we reopened last July, the atmosphere was monumental and electrifying, we didn’t even need music so closing down was difficult.
Looking Ahead: The chef recently discussed the ‘devastating’ impact Covid has had on his restaurants and even said he plans to open up further when the lockdown is eased.
“In December, our most important month, we canceled 22,500 reservations, but I have always been optimistic.
‘It’s difficult, but we will get out of this: we have recreated, redeveloped and researched new ideas, so when we get out of this lockdown we will open as new restaurants. We hope to reopen at Easter. Would be a dream ‘.
Gordon also spoke to Graham about his new BBC trivia show, Bank Balance, and revealed that the series was set during the last lockdown.
He said: ‘It developed through Zoom during the lockdown around this time last year, with the team spread out across the country, I was in Cornwall with my dear neighbors, and we brought this high pressure game to an amazing place.
‘The set is really spectacular and intimidating and then you have me asking the questions! It’s really exciting.’
Coming Soon: Gordon’s new Bank Balance show kicks off Tuesday, and the chef recently revealed that the series ran during the latest lockdown.
