Google Pixel 5s, explained

The 2020 Pixel story took an interesting twist earlier this week, with the emergence of an apparent “Pixel 5S” version, an apparently turbocharged version that could be one of the best Android phones of the year. Photos leaked on Twitter show an EVT (engineering validation test), which features a Pixel 4A-like Google phone with a dual camera and slimmer bezels. EVT means that it is a very early tool, intended to exclude bugs in Pixel’s hardware before moving into later stages of development. A sticker on the back of the device indicates the April 8 manufacturing date. We can also tell that it is an older unit as it is running a pre-beta version of Android 11, still calling itself “Android R” in the photos.

We have seen such pre-production pixels before leaked, twisted into something from an alien alphabet with the Google “G” logo on the back, and other identification marks to thwart those leaking.

Conventional wisdom when this “Pixel 5S” was first leaked, it could possibly be a higher version of the Pixel 5 with millimeter-wave 5G technology. But the fact that it is an older unit, apparently running older firmware, gives us clues as to its actual origin.

Another clue came Android central Recently, news of the arrival of Pixel 5 and 4a 5G broke. Our sources have revealed that in fact, Google’s 2020 Pixel names were changed throughout 2020, as the company struggled to delay the rollout of the Pixel 4a because of COVID-19.

Google’s fall 2020 phones debuted as Pixel 5 and Pixel 5s.

The original plan, we are reliably informed, came as Pixel 5 for the Pixel 4a 5G (codenamed Bramble), while another, more premium Pixel (codename Redfin) would take another name to denote its higher status. Based on the deadline for Redfin to enter the EVT stage, and the fact that this device is running outdated firmware, I am confident that we have solved the Pixel 5S puzzle. At some point the plan was for Redfin to ship as Pixel 5s – a smaller and more premium version of the base model Pixel 5 (Bramble, the phone we now know as the Pixel 4a 5G).

We find the names of Bramble and Redfin changed several times during the development of the phone. Actually, XDA’s Mishal Rahman It was found that at one point Bramble was called Pixel 4a XL.

So the time frame for both devices might look like this:

Pixel 5 -> Pixel 4a XL -> Pixel 4a 5G

Pixel 5s -> Pixel 5

The original naming convention – Pixel 5 and Pixel 5s – makes more sense in the alternate-universe good times of 2020, where there is no COVID and Pixel 4a is periodically launched in the jam-packed Google I / O . The 4a can enjoy four months of sales before the premium Pixel arrives. But in our current, poor 2020 times, Pixel 4a phones are making their way to customers right now, just three weeks before the expected arrival of the two new models.

This is a strange year for Pixel in general, as Google hits the reset switch.

Google may, presumably, feel that soon after Pixel 4a two phones will be launched with “5” in their name that would later seem unnecessarily dated.

This is a more awkward year for Pixel hardware in general, as Google hits the reset switch to the traditional “small” plus “XL” dynamic, used in every previous Pixel release cycle, and in its high Snapdragon 800-series chip survives – ideal model. Bramble and Redfin defy Google’s usual pixel naming conventions.

While all three share the 2020 Pixel’s design similarities, the internal hardware of the Bramble and Redfin are enough to make two variants of basically the same phone – we’re hoping that both will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G chipset.

But with its plastic body, 60 Hz refresh rate and large screen border, the Bramble is also quite common with the Pixel 4A. The naming was always going to be awkward, with Bramble having both Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 areas. Hence the slightly clumsy compromise name we eventually ended up with: the Pixel 4A5G. (And as such, the Pixel 5S reverts back to the plain Pixel 5)

As the Pixel 5s name suggests, this week’s leaks suggest that Google should be introduced to the world recently, with its new and very different lineup.
