Gilead Sciences will allocate $ 100 million to create a program to address HIV / AIDS in the southern United States, the company announced Monday.

Southern states represent 45 percent of all people living with an HIV diagnosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rates of new infections rival those seen in the 1980s, said Gregg Alton, executive vice president of corporate and medical affairs at Gilead.

"In some communities, those rates are rising, a chilling reminder that the epidemic is far from a thing of the past," Alton said.
