Fugitive wanted to capture Georgia sheriff’s deputy shooting

Dalton, Ga. – Authorities say a man has been apprehended in the recent shooting of a Georgia sheriff’s deputy.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation tweeted late Wednesday that Texas fugitive Dalton Potter was in custody with a picture of him inside a vehicle.

Investigators have said Potter fired multiple shots at Whitfield County Sheriff’s Deputy Darrell Hackney at around midnight on Monday morning during a traffic stop in Dalton. Hackney was killed, but his ballistic vest saved him, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. Authorities described Potter as “armed and dangerous”.

The GBI said Hackney and another deputy extinguished the fire, but Potter departed south on Interstate 75. He crushed the truck and fled into the forest on foot.

Authorities said Wednesday evening that a person had been shot in northwest Georgia after an encounter with Potter earlier.

Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood told reporters that investigators believe the 29-year-old Potter was inside a rural perimeter, which officials had located northwest of the city of Resaca.

Chitwood said the citizen who fired the bullet was hospitalized in a stable condition.

“We probably have over 100 officers, we’ve established a strong perimeter, we still have the (Georgia State Patrol) helicopter in the air, we’ve got a K-9 to track the ground in the woods,” Chitwood Said, seeing that it was getting dark outside.

Noah Cloer identified his father, Eddie Cloer, as the victim of the Wednesday evening shooting.

Eddie Cloer was feeding the animals in his yard when Potter attacked him, shot him in the arm and palmed his head, Noh Cloer told WTVC. Eddie Cloar was able to fire back and Potter escaped.

Authorities also revealed on Wednesday that Potter was carrying explosives in a stolen trailer at the time. The GBI said the stolen trailer was found along the southeast lanes of I-75, near the Whitfield-Gordon County line.

The agency said that GBI’s bomb disposal unit would get rid of the explosives.
