“The President of the Republic has been positively diagnosed today for Kovid-19,” the statement by Elysee Palace read.
It said the president was diagnosed when he was tested “at the onset of the first symptoms”.
“According to the current health regulations applicable to all, the President of the Republic shall separate himself for 7 days. He continues to work and perform his activities remotely.”
His office said that French Prime Minister Jean Castex would also be self-segregated.
Macron had a busy week in the days leading up to his positive test. On Wednesday, he met with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa for lunch, and attended a cabinet meeting.
On Tuesday, Macron met several people including Peter Maurer, chairman of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
France reported 17,615 new cases and 289 deaths on Wednesday, causing more than 2.4 million infections and 59,361 deaths in the country.
