The Pittsburgh Steelers are taking an early look at the QB market.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Dwayne Haskins has a tour set with the Steelers on Thursday, per sources briefed on the situation.
In late December, Haskins was cut by the Washington football team before the season ended, after starting just 13 in less than two years.
The former first-round pick also recently visited the Carolina Panthers.
The Steelers surprisingly did not upgrade their rub room in 2020, with Mason Rudolph and Jose Dobbs behind Ben Roethlis Eger. With Big Ben’s future in doubt this season, meeting Haskins is an early sign that Pittsburgh is looking for young signal-callers in the upcoming season.
Swift’s, if nominal, interest in Haskin underscores the latent talent of the Ohio State product port. A former first-round pick, QB has a large arm that can spray the ball across the field. However, defending mechanics and reading conflicts have led to inconsistent games. Off-field concerns emanating from Washington led to his release.
Haskins has the talent if a club is ready to nurture a 23-year-old who needs experience and positive coaching to get his career on track. Under Mike Tomlin, behind Big Ben, there could be a positive landing spot for both sides if the trip leads to a job.
