Ford Ranger Tremor: Meet the Midsize Off-Road Adventure Truck

Ford answered our prayers today and brought us a truly off-road-capable Ranger pickup. Here is all you need to know about the 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor Off-Road Package.

While the Ranger with the Tremor package is not the Ranger Raptor, we are all longing, It would stand as the most off-road capable ranger on offer in North America.

However, the key to this package is that an off-road upgrade will not degrade on-road performance. Nor will they affect payload and towing capabilities. The 2021 Ranger Tremor should make a great all-around adventure truck and a small alternative to the F-150 Tremor and super-duty Tremor models.

2021 Ford Ranger Tremor Off-Road Package

What will you get with the 2021 Ranger Tremor Off-Road Package? Ford included upgraded road-suspension, larger aggressive tires, more recovery points, underbody armor and sporty appearance updates inside and out.

Simply put, the Tremor package is one step above the FX4 package in terms of off-road capability.

Long and wide

You get folded knuckles and aggressive 32-inch all-terrain tires – the General Grabber ATX – with the Tremor package. And larger tires wrap around new 17-inch “magnetic” gray wheels.

But the really big news with the Tremor package is the improved suspension. Shocks all around the Fox 2.0 monotube, with piggyback reservoirs in the rear, mark major upgrades. New off-road-tuned coil springs up front and leaf springs out, these new shocks provide a great ride on the road and off.

Add this to the new soft sway straps, and this setup offers an impressive 6.5 inches of front suspension travel and 8.1 inches of rear travel.

The combo of rolling stock and suspension makes for a longer and slightly wider truck. Compared to the base Ranger SuperCrew 4 × 4, this setup offers an improved-correction approach angle (30.9 °), departure angle (24.2 °), and ground clearance (9.7 in).

Off-road capacity

The Ranger already comes with four drive modes, and a rear electric locking differential with trail control (off-road cruise control), Terrain Management System. But to make the off-road ant even more, the Ranger Tremor gets “a rearranged traction control system for better acceleration and traction in the gravel, so customers can punch it in a washout, according to Ford”.

While this may sound like a lot of mumbo jumbo, it does sound that this truck can provide a good time in loose conditions.

Below the Tremor specified Ranger, you’ll also find frame-mounted steel skid plates. From the back, you will find two additional tow hooks (two standard hooks up top). And on the sides of this truck you’ll find new hoop-step-style side steps and wider fender flares.

As a bonus, the 2021 Ranger Tremor package offers a dash-mounted accessory switch pod. This six-switch dash pod allows you to run all your off-road electrical accessories through a single OEM switch panel. There is no need for aftermarket switch panels for your winch, air compressor, auxiliary lighting, etc.

Tremor styling

While the Tremor package has a lot of functional upgrades, it also packs some sporty style upgrades. The truck’s nose has a new grille with gray ground (matching the wheels), as well as black stripes and red corner accents. Inside, black suede inserts are found on the front seats and “Tremor” badges are stitched to the rear.

Standard “Tremor” on all Tremor equipped rangers have decals at the bedside. If you so choose, you can also add a Tremor graphics package. It combines black and red stripes under the hood and the sides of the truck.

If you ask me, they are an acquired taste, because I do not believe that they improve the lines of this truck in any way.

2021 Ford Ranger against Tremor Competition

The Ranger Tremor must succeed in one major area: overall versatility. The Tremor off-road package does not reduce the Ranger’s payload (1,430 lb) or towing capacity (7,500 lb). The package does not support the 270-horsepower, 310-pound-foot, 2.3L EcoBoost by the 10-speed automatic that we already love with the Ranger. Sadly, there is no major power option or manual transmission yet.

Nevertheless, there is stiff competition in the US truck space, especially in the off-road-optimized category. The Chevrolet ZR2 and Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro are current class leaders.

While the new Ranger Tremor model lacks some of the things found in the competition (33-inch tires, front locker, diesel options, manual transmission, etc.), it’s a great all-around truck for 99% of casual off-road explorers. Should be .
