Florida thought it had dodged the coronavirus. Now she faces a surge.

MIAMI – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the state’s declining number of coronavirus cases in late April as he prepared to reopen the state’s economy. Two months later, the number of cases is increasing, imposing taxes on hospitals and forcing some companies to close again.

“Florida has derailed,” said Thomas Hladish, research scientist at the University of Florida Institute of Emerging Pathogens, adding that the trend in case numbers is largely driven by younger people who resume normal activities. “It is very serious.”
