Florida officer kills rabid otter after several attacks

MAITLAND, Florida, USA (AP) Authorities say a Florida police officer shot a rabid otter several days after people reported attacks.

The Sentinel of Orlando

Reports that the Maitland police officer stopped the sick animal last week near Lake Maitland.

Police say a visitor at a nearby park reported being attacked on January 7, followed by two more attacks the next day. Several days later, the police responded to a house where someone reported a sick otter in his backyard. The officers say that the animal seemed to be holding and trembling.

One report says that the officer shot the otter twice, killing him. The Orange County Animal Services confirmed that the otter was angry on Saturday. Officials say the victims are being vaccinated after exposure.

Rabies is a disease of the nervous system and can be fatal for warm-blooded animals and people.
