A Florida family faces federal charges after allegedly marketing a COVID-19 cure called “Miracle Mineral Solution,” which was actually bleaching and life-threatening if consumed.
The Grenons, father Mark and sons Jonathan, Jordan and Joseph, were charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to violate the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act and criminal contempt on Wednesday, according to a Department of Justice ( DOJ) press release.
The Justice Department described the “Miracle Mineral Solution” (MMS) as a “chemical solution containing sodium chlorite and water,” adding that the Grenons “allegedly directed their clients to ingest MMS orally, prompting the solution turns into chlorine dioxide, a powerful bleach. ” it is normally used for industrial water treatment or for bleaching textiles, pulp and paper. “
The family claimed that the solution could cure, treat and prevent COVID-19, but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved it to treat COVID-19 or any other disease. In fact, the FDA has urged people not to consume it, saying that “drinking MMS is the same as taking chlorine and can cause dangerous side effects, including severe vomiting, diarrhea and life-threatening low blood pressure.”
According to court filings, prior to the pandemic, the Grenons marketed MMS as a cure for many other serious illnesses, including Alzheimer’s, autism, multiple sclerosis, and HIV / AIDS.
“We continue to protect the public from criminal conduct that exploits the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ariana Fajardo Orshan, US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, said in the statement. “Not only is this MMS product toxic, but its distribution and use can prevent sick people from receiving the legitimate medical care they need … Make claims that untested medications, especially potentially dangerous chlorine dioxide products and unapproved, they can cure or prevent COVID-19 or any other disease is unacceptable. “
