Canberra, Australia (AP) – Two fishermen have rescued a naked fugitive who found them sitting on a tree branch at the residence of an Australian crocodile.
Cam Faust said that on Wednesday, he and fellow entertainer Fisher Kev Joiner heard 40-year-old Luke Voserensky for help on Sunday, as he planted crab traps from his dinghy in Mangrove on the outskirts of the northern city of Darwin.
Faust said that Voskrensky – who was involved in mud, cuts and insect bites – had explained that he had been lost for four days, had survived eating snails and used his clothes to “bits and pieces along the way” . “
“It made no sense to us,” Faust said, referring to the explanation for her nudity. “He had a nest in the tree, and he was only laying one meter (39 inches) above the water and there were crocodiles in the water so he did well to survive.”
Joiner said friends were hesitant before bringing Voskrensky on board.
“Once we saw how bad he was and how many cuts he had and that he was dehydrated and very weak … We thought we’d better get him in the boat,” Joiner said.
“We thought he was supposed to be just a big night after the new year and got lost and did a prank in the bush himself,” he said.
Faust said he took off his underwear and handed Voskrensky his shorts and a beer as the three made their way back to Darwin.
“He looked like he needed a beer, though he was in a bad way,” Faust said.
An ambulance was waiting on the Darwin boat ramp when they arrived. Vosrekensky was taken to Darwin Hospital, where he was kept under police custody as he was treated after coming into contact.
Police said Vosrekensky was freed on bail on charges of armed robbery, multiple aggravated assaults, deprivation of liberty and stealing. But he cut off his electronic surveillance equipment last week and attempted to evade police.
Court official Xavier La Canna said he was hospitalized, as Voskerensky faced new charges of appearing in court and bail on Tuesday.
Voskerensky will next appear in court on February 9, La Canna said.
Faust said he decided to go to Voskrensky at the hospital after being discovered to be wanted by police.
