FDA recalls Sportmix pet food from Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. after 70 pet deaths

NEW YORK – The FDA is extending a recall for dry pet food after dozens of more than 70 pet deaths and dozens of others have become ill.

The manufacturer of Sportmix pet foods recalled some products last month as it was revealed that it may contain deadly levels of one type of mold.

As of Monday, the FDA said it knows of more than 70 pets that have died and more than 80 who have become ill after eating Sportmix pet food.

The FDA states that not all cases have been officially confirmed to have aflatoxin toxicity through laboratory testing or review of veterinary records.

But now the company is adding products that have corns in the recall list.

Some of the symptoms reported include fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice and diarrhea. In some cases, pets may have liver damage, but do not show other symptoms.

Pet owners should stop feeding their pets recalled products and consult their veterinarian, especially if their pet is showing any signs of illness.
