Fantasy Football: High-ankle sprain poses real questions about Michael Thomas’ value

Fantasy Reaction: Michael Thomas to Miss Multiple Week with Ankle Injury
(5:38)

<p>According to NFL.com's Tom Pelasero, the St. Star receiver and the preseason consensus No. 1 Fantasy Football wide receiver Michael Thomas is expected to miss several weeks after the team suffered a sprained ankle late in Week 1. It is a crushing blow to one of the league's best offenses, one of the league's best receivers. It will also sting the lineup of fictional managers for some time.

Since 2017, Thomas has scored 28.8% of Drew Trees goals in the Saints offense. You already know that he is good for around nine points and well over 100 receptions per season thanks to that engraved target volume. It is this that makes him prominent in the imaginary, and it is the Saints’ dependence on Thomas that opens things up elsewhere on the field.

Typically, a high-ankle sprain will cost a player anywhere from two to six games and may have a dull effect after weeks. It is as if he has never been hurt while coming back and playing early due to an injury. These things are disturbing. As much as we would like to give Thomas the benefit of the doubt here, the truth is that he has missed a game in his career. We do not know how his body reacts to this.

We cannot see them again on the field until after week 7 of the saints.

Thomas does not have a place of production. Those who draft him should put him on the bench and be patient. Trade him away? Only if a generous offer is made. Otherwise, the timing is not right – a fictional manager should prefer to wait until Thomas really needs some wins before shutting down another contending team. Think of it this way: If you can put your team around 500 without Thomas, imagine what you can do after Thomas returns.

But when you are out you have to find someone else. On the Saints, the top two receivers with the most gains are Emmanuel Sanders and Trekuan Smith. It was Smith who played more snaps (44) than Sanders (33) in Week 1, but neither saw many numbers beyond Sanders’ short-yardage score.

Smith has had opportunities to play a big role before but has never played without Thomas before. However, optimism figures to improve his goal volume: in 11 of 27 career games with three or more goals, Smith has eight touchdowns and two 100-yard games. It’s not bad, especially since those games included three or four goals. He is absolutely speculative.

Sanders has recently been an assistant to fantasy managers as of the first half of 2019 and would figure to be a more popular name than Waves. On his side: experience working as the No. 1 receiver and pedigree of being a good imaginary option. He should also get a chance to see the increased goals with Thomas, but inconsistency has long been an issue for him. Last year he had 10-plus fantasy points in 5 of 17 regular season games in non-PPR (15 in PPR) (this is not a typo, he was traded mid-season and played every single week) . It is also worth dropping.

But why get one of them when you could hit your neighborhood wire and go after the receiver on a different team? Anthony Miller, Mike Williams, Robbie Anderson and Paris Campbell all figure to be better than Smith and Sanders, with Thomas’ ability to help your roster even after his return. Get one of them first, then expect to associate Smith or Sanders with a claim. Neither Saints receiver also issued a warrant for 10% of the FAB bid.

Will these people stand in sufficient numbers with their peers to help Drew Breeze? See, Breeze had just a disappointing game (18 fictional points) with Thomas. How often would he be outstanding without Thomas? This would put those receivers ahead of Jared Cook and Alvin Kamra in a huge way, but Breeze’s 60% completion rate and 5.33 yards per attempt from Week 1 are not particularly promising. You can choose to stream the quarterback position and bench bench until Thomas returns. Ryan Tannehill and Gardner Minsue quickly come to mind as replacements.

As Cook and Kamara, their roles figure to expand. Cook was already an increasingly effective downfield target for the Trees, but his coverage may change as Thomas leaves. For now he is a reliable starter, especially entering a matchup against the young Raiders secondary. Kamra could do a little more work, and while that adds little risk of opening him up to injuries, the truth is that he is very important that he is a playwright for the Saints until Thomas returns. He remains a top four fantasy.
