Family: Wisconsin teenager in "good spirits" & # 39; after the kidnapping, escape

The grandfather of a 13-year-old girl in northwest Wisconsin who, according to authorities, escaped from a man who killed her parents and held her captive for three months, said Sunday that she is "in a very good mood".

Jayme Closs left the cabin on Thursday near the small town of Gordon, where she said she had been incarcerated. He approached a woman who was walking a dog and asked for help.

Police officers arrested Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, minutes later, based on Jayme's description of his vehicle. Authorities hold Patterson on suspicion of kidnapping and murder.

Little has been revealed about Jayme's ordeal since his abduction in mid-October, although there may be more details on Monday, when Patterson is expected to be indicted and appear in court for the first time.

Jayme's grandfather, Robert Naiberg, said on Sunday that, given the circumstances, the teenager is holding out.

"He is doing exceptionally well for what happened," Naiberg told The Associated Press by telephone. "She is in a very good mood."

On Sunday, parishioners in the area said their prayers were answered by Jayme's safe return.

"We're very happy and we could not be happier, it's a miracle and it's wonderful," Mary Haas told the Minneapolis Star Tribune as she removed the Christmas decorations after the Mbad at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Barron. "We pray and pray and pray."

Jayme has been staying with an aunt in Barron since she ran away.

"It's a great day in our area," said Larry Leff at St. Peter's Catholic Church in nearby Cameron. "God answered all our prayers."

An intruder opened the door of the house of James and Denise Closs near Barron with a shotgun on October 15, shot the couple and left with Jayme.

While the investigators have said that Patterson's goal was to kidnap Jayme, he has no apparent connection to the family. Naiberg told The Associated Press on Saturday that Jayme told FBI agents he did not know Patterson.

Patterson's lawyers, Charles Glynn and Richard Jones said in a statement that they consider the situation "very tragic" and that they rely on the court system to treat their client fairly.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald told reporters Friday that Patterson took steps to avoid leaving evidence in the Closs family's home, including shaving his head before entering. A shotgun was recovered from the cabin, which was owned by Patterson's father.
