Fallout 76: Review, Power Armor, tips and what you need to know

Only a few years after the release of Fallout 4, Bethesda surprised fans by officially announcing Fallout 76, the next entry in their beloved post-apocalyptic role franchise. The new game was revealed in a trailer after a series of jokes, and Bethesda discussed it in more detail at E3 2018 and at QuakeCon 2018. We even had the opportunity to play the game in a recent preview event. But the game is already out, and we have only just begun to advance in the great adventure of Bethesda.

To make sure you are aware of everything there is to know about Fallout 76, we have compiled all the information we have about the game so far: the platforms it is on, its online functionality, its anti-duel features and the game falls on the series timeline.

If you've been playing the beta version, you'll be happy to know that the game is receiving an update of the launch day that contains a ton of new content. In the meantime, be attentive to our full review, as well as to a large number of guides that will help you start the game.

Our review of Fallout 76

"Bethesda has stated that he intends to continue supporting the game for a long time, but at launch, Fallout 76 is a bad experience, there are echoes of the series' admirable qualities, but look beyond that facade, beyond the funny animations of Vault Boy, beyond the familiar radio tracks, and you will not find heart, only an unimportant wasteland condemned to be attacked again and again ". Read our review.

What is Fallout 76?

Fallout 76 is a prequel to all previous Fallout games. In 2102, you interpret an inhabitant of Vault 76 that leaves the shelter 25 years after the bombs fell on the United States. Your task is simple: explore what remains of post-apocalyptic America and rebuild civilization.

Longtime fans will probably recognize the Vault 76; Although it's not a place we've visited before, this is not the first mention of the series. Both Fallout 3 and 4 refer to it and, according to Fallout Wikia, this vault based in West Virginia was occupied by 500 of the best and brightest minds in the United States. Unlike the more grotesque experimental vaults of the Fallout universe, vault 76 is a control vault that is intended to open 20 or more years after a nuclear war. But if the Vault was supposed to open 20 years after the bombs fell, why have 25 years gone by? The story has some surprises in store for those willing to face their myriad challenges.

Fallout 76 uses the creation engine, the same engine used to make Fallout 4, but supposedly will have many more graphic details than its predecessor. The director of the game, Todd Howard, said that Fallout 76 has a new technology of rendering and lighting, which allows "16 times" the detail.

Who is developing it?

Bethesda Game Studios, the Maryland-based developer responsible for the Elder Scrolls series and both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, is working on the game. In addition, Bethesda Game Studios Austin, formerly BattleCry Studios, helped refine the creation engine to be compatible with multiplayer functionality.

Is it an online survival game?

Fallout 76 is a type of game very different from its predecessors. It's "completely online", but do not worry, you can also play alone. According to Bethesda, the idea of adopting this approach to survival in an open world emerged four years ago, when he began working on building a Fallout experience for multiple players. Howard described the game's approach to survival as a "weak point," which means that death does not amount to a loss of progression.

You can form a party with up to three other players. You will not be able to manage your location on the servers when you log in, since you will be automatically inserted into a session with others when you start the game. Of course, you also have the option to join your friends and play together.

Howard commented that Fallout 76 will have dedicated servers that will support the game "now and for years to come." At the launch, there will only be public servants, but Bethesda plans to introduce private servers that allow players to invite friends to play to avoid unwanted behavior.

Some classic mechanics of previous games will change to adapt to the change to the online game. For example, V.A.T.S has been reconfigured to work in real time, while allowing players to attack specific parts of the enemy's body. But this time, it has been updated to be more of a tool that allows it to detect hazards in the environment.

How big is the world?

According to Howard, the world of Fallout 76 is four times larger than Fallout 4. There are six different regions to explore, and each has its own unique style, risks and rewards. Confirmed areas include the West Virginia State Capitol, The Greenbrier, Woodburn Circle, New River Gorge Bridge and Camden Park. Within each area you will find a variety of new creatures to find, some of which are based on the folklore of West Virginia. You can take it in the full map in the image below.

What can you do?

As in previous games, players spend most of their time exploring and completing quests. However, Fallout 76 does not feature any non-player human characters, since all surviving humans are controlled by active players. Instead, the game uses a combination of robot NPCs, collectable recordings and environmental narratives to give players what they need to unite missions and history in general.

Given the premise of the game of rebuilding the world, there are elements of base construction similar to Fallout 4. You can set up bases anywhere using an element called Mobile Assembly and Assembly Platform, or C.A.M.P. These can be placed in the world and allow you to build a makeshift camp. We could see the player placing walls and decorating the base with pool tables, bathrooms and other objects in the house. As the name part of the "mobile platform" implies, your CAMP can also be collected and relocated, allowing you to move your base to anywhere in the world.

While you can help build the world, you can also destroy it. If you have the necessary nuclear launch codes, it is possible to access a missile silo to fire a nuclear weapon at any point on the map. By doing so, it radiates the chosen area, but also allows the opportunity to discover rare weapons, equipment and objects. Be cautious; Killing an area also makes more powerful enemies appear, which makes it harder to survive. But do not be discouraged by this, the C.A.M.P. The blueprint system makes it easy for players to quickly rebuild their homes, and if they are aware of an incoming threat, they can pack their things and move to a new location.

As an online experience, the player's choice is incredibly important, and it gives them the freedom to choose who the heroes and villains are. The first images showed several players participating in combats and participating in friendly activities, which seems to indicate that players have the freedom to choose their paths in the world of Fallout 76.

How does character creation and progression work?

There are character creation tools similar to those in Fallout 4. However, you can change your appearance at any time. In addition, you can also use the new photo mode of the game during the creation process to see better how your character looks, as well as to take some photos that you can share on social networks.

SPECIAL system comes back and is a little different. Like the previous games, SPECIAL covers the following statistics: Strength, Perception, Resistance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck. They give you a point to put in any of those statistics every time you level up. The first thing you do when you leave the vault is choose a SPECIAL and then choose a benefit in that particular SPECIAL. Essentially, each SPECIAL is a set of points for your benefits.

But unlike the previous games, the advantages are now cards that you can equip and unlock by going up in a given SPECIAL range; however, you can change the cards at any time if you wish to modify your compilation. Each SPECIAL feature you develop has a benefit letter limit of 15. These benefit cards can be further improved from one to five points to increase their power.

You can get additional benefit cards through Perk Card Packages (four random cards), which you earn every two levels initially (1-10), and then every 5 after that. You can also choose a benefit card by level, usually of your SPECIAL election. There are hundreds of benefit cards that you can unlock, so of course, the SPECIAL ranges are eliminated after a while (you get a SPECIAL rank each time you level up). At level 50, you will stop increasing the SPECIAL ranges, but you will still get packets of cards.

How does PvP work?

When you shoot someone, you do a little damage, which can be equated to slapping him lightly to challenge him to a duel. In response to this, the other player may choose to ignore or participate. If they engage in a battle with you, they will begin to suffer total damage. Whoever dies in this PvP game with consent has the option to seek revenge. Doing so gives that person the opportunity to earn double the rewards granted to make them successful.

If you prefer to ignore a game of PvP, there is no way to avoid being killed, despite the small damage they inflicted during the initiation phases. However, if a player kills you in these circumstances, that player becomes a wanted Assassin and will not receive rewards for having killed you.

A wanted Murder is marked on the map as a red star and given a reward for the head. Players looking to take advantage of this reward are not visible on the Assassin's map. If the murderer dies, the money from that reward is taken out of his actions.

In order for players to have time to properly acclimatize to how Fallout 76 plays, PvP will not be available to players up to level five. And if you perish from any PvP encounter, the only thing you will lose is the garbage you have been collecting, which can be reclaimed after death if it has not been picked up by other players. You can always store garbage in hiding places around the world, in order to safeguard a part of your actions. The armor and weapons are kept in your inventory after death.

We recently received a handy version of Fallout 76. It is played similar to Fallout 4, but it has some new additions that subtly change the paradigm established by the previous entries in the series. We had the opportunity to experience three hours of play, explore a decent part of the opening area while undertaking missions and, in general, work collaboratively with the players around us. There's a lot to unravel about what the next open-world multiplayer role-playing game will look like, so be sure to watch the video above and read our full thoughts in our detailed preview that details what we have to play.

Any voice chat?

It is possible to chat with your teammates and even with strangers you discover in the world. It is based on the area, so your ability to listen to other works will vary. But if you do not want to have anything to do with strangers, it is possible to silence their voices completely.

Guides and what to do first

Fallout 76 is a massive game that could overwhelm you from the start. To help ease the pain of leaving Vault 76, we have gathered some recommendations of where to go first. But if you want a complete summary of what you need to know before starting, take a look at our Beginner's Guide to Fallout 76. In addition, we have guides on Perk cards and Power Armor locations.

Release date

Fallout 76 is being developed for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and is currently scheduled to be released on November 14. Unfortunately, there is no news about a release of Nintendo Switch, which did not seem to be out of question after the Skyrim version. The launch did it to that platform.
