Facebook teamed up with Ray-Ban maker for smart glass for the first time in 2021

Facebook on Wednesday announced the release of its first pair of smart glasses in 2021 with Ray-Ban producer Luxottica.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a live stream from Facebook Connect, “After spending time with their team and visiting their factory, I knew that they wanted to help us bring the best technology with the best specs Was the right partner. ” Online event for its virtual and augmented reality products.

Facebook and Luxottica will make the glasses part of a multiyear partnership. The pairing of the two companies was first reported by CNBC last year.

“I can’t go into the full product description yet, but they really are the next step on the road to glasses of augmented reality,” Zuckerberg said. “And they look great.”

Zuckerberg also announced that the company plans to release Project Aria, a research tool the company will use to learn as it develops its smart glass.

Andrews “Boz” Bosworth, Facebook’s hardware chief, said the Project Aria specs would be worn around the company’s premises and publicly by Facebook’s employees starting in September. Bosworth stated that the glasses do not have reality features and are not for sale. The devices will capture video, audio, eye-tracking and location data that Facebook can use to aid in its development of augmented reality smart glasses.

“It’s a research tool that will help us understand how to build software and hardware for real, working AR glass,” Bosworth said.

Bosworth said that when and where employees wearing Project Aria glasses would undergo training on how they could wear research equipment. He said that sensitive places like toilets would be closed. Before the data collected can be used for research, it will be scrubbed on sensitive identifiable details such as people’s faces or vehicle license plates, Bosworth said. Additionally, these workers will have clothes that make them easily recognizable as Facebook employees, he said.
