“This episode, I think, adds to the image (perhaps unjustifiably) that Pompeo is a political activist, as a ‘go-to’ guy for Trump,” retired Gen. James Clapper, the previous Director of National Intelligence beneath President Obama tells CNN. He added that it’s “not a good place for a director of the CIA to be.”

Clapper, who additionally served because the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency beneath Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, was echoed in a separate interview with CNN by Retired Gen. Michael Hayden, who labored because the director of the National Security Agency and later the Central Intelligence Agency beneath three presidents.
