On August 28, Apple promoted a massive new update to PUBG Mobile on iOS, one of Fortnite’s biggest battle royale competitors (which received its season 4 update on platforms other than iOS). While Epic Games can generally see PUBG Mobile as its competition, the game uses Epic’s unrealistic engine – which Apple tried to cut updates on iOS and Mac – so Sweeney promoted the game Decided, as well.
The passive-aggressive nature of the tweet is certainly not lost on us, because if Apple ultimately does not support the Unreal Engine on its devices, it will likely affect PUBG Mobile. Unreal is one of the most popular engines in the world, with support on almost every device including mobile, PC and console. It is not only used for games on its own, but has been modified over the years by other studios to fit their projects. Unreal Engine 5 will be supported on next generation systems.
Shots from Epic Games at Apple have continued with their free Fortnite campaign and tournament. It also gave away assets so that players could make their free Fortnite merchandise, even allowing them to sell it. As the logo parodied one of Apple’s earlier designs, it seems that Epic is trying to win in the court of public opinion if it can’t actually win its case.
And despite not being as successful as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile has managed to create a healthy niche. Its 1.0 update will include major improvements across the board, and a new competition is set to award $ 2 million in prizes. Unlike Fortnite, it does not offer cross-play with PC or console players and is technically a separate game.
