Elon Musk invites other automakers to use Tesla software, batteries and technology

Tesla may be the world’s most valuable automaker as the market cap and undisputed leader in the electric vehicle market, but the company cannot completely infect the auto industry for stability on its own. To accomplish this, other automakers have to go into electrification. And if Elon Musk’s recent tweets are any indication, it appears that Tesla is ready to help to speed up its mission even further.

According to Elon Musk, Tesla’s mission is not to crush its rivals in the auto market. Instead, the company’s real mission is to accelerate the arrival of sustainable energy. The company is set to meet this goal, including supplying its rivals with key components, which will allow them to produce electric cars comparable to Tesla’s lineup.

“Tesla is open to supplying licensing software and powertrains and batteries. We are only trying to accelerate sustainable energy, not to crush competitors!” Musk wrote.

In a follow-up tweet, Musk said that Tesla would also be willing to share its software with its competitors. These include Autopilot, which can give a notable boost to the autonomous driving market. Tesla’s development of its autonomous driving suite is heavily reliant on real-world data of real drivers on the road, after all, in addition to other non-Tesla cars that use the Autopilot will certainly be a big plus.

This is a point Elon Musk has highlighted in the past. Back in 2018, Musk noted that Tesla’s supercharger network, largely considered one of the company’s “deaths”, is not a “walled garden”. Speaking during the Q1 2018 earnings call, Musk stated that Tesla would be happy to partner with other automakers in the EV industry, provided they pay and share proportionately for the use of their vehicles.

“We have always said that this is not meant as a walled garden, and we are happy to support other automakers and let them use our supercharged stations. They would just need to pay, you know, share a cost proportional to their vehicle usage, and they would need to be able to accept our charge rate or at least our connector, at least our connector. There must be an adapter for. This is something we are very open about, ”said Musk.

So far, only EV startup Bollinger Motors has publicly requested to use Tesla’s Supercharger network for its B1and B2 off-road vehicles. Neither Tesla nor Elon Musk have issued a public response as requested to date. That being said, Tesla’s position in the auto industry today is different from just a few years ago. Today, Tesla is in much calmer waters, and is trying to make a viable electric vehicle for other carmakers that could be positioned well enough to expand their business.
