Health experts say that wearing a mask gives protection to both the person wearing COVID-19 and the people around them. Now, CBS Denver reports, there is evidence that wearing two masks may provide even greater protection.
The station’s medical editor, Dr. Dave Hanida talked about those reports in an interview on CBSN Denver.
“This has been supported by research that the two masks are, in fact, better than one,” Hanida said. “Specifically what we’re saying is that two masks can actually equal the protection you get from an N-95 mask, which is supposed to be the best mask from a complete respirator-type unit is less.”
He said that wearing a surgical mask with a cloth mask provides an extra layer of protection.
“The reason for this is that you wind up to get more filtration of viral particles. It becomes more of an obstacle course for the viral particle to move into the air in your nose and throat and then into your lungs. “
But Hanida warned that the three masks may go too far, as it can disrupt the ability to breathe.
He reported that Joe Biden has been “double-masking” for several months, as have NFL coaches in sports.
“Even in my own family, when we have external contact – limited as it may be – we do a double mask,” Hanida said. “So the question is, ‘is it effective?’ The answer is ‘yes’ – and this is something you want to consider. “
